Director: Sam Raimi

It’s here! It’s here! The new Spider-Man! This movie could not have arrived with more pomp and circumstance if Jesus had strolled into Times Square holding it above his head and bellowing about judgment day. So, does it live up to the hype and expectations created by two hugely successful previous installments? I would have to say it does, sort of. This episode follows the same formula as the first two by balancing innovative action scenes and cool villains with the soap opera of Peter Parker’s life. The villains here are not quite as good as in the first two. Three of them is one too many and both Venom and Sandman (I read the comics. Since when is The Sandman a mountain-sized juggernaut?)seem to be too powerful for Spidey making the action less appealing. As well, the ending is too touchy, feely and goes on too long. All in all, however, this is still a very good addition to the Spider-Man family.

This time out the webslinger is planning to propose to MJ, but finds plenty of obstacles and distractions to getting this done. All the regulars are back and do a fine job, but J.K. Simmons steals almost every scene he is in as the irascible J. Jonah Jameson. James Franco has a larger part as Harry Osborne. Gwen Stacey’s character, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, is introduced as Peter’s Lab partner, and fans of the comic series have to wonder where that will lead. Topher Grace joins the cast as a rival photographer and Parker comes across a substance delivered by meteorite that seems to suspiciously increase his power and plus he has this Sandman character to deal with, too. There are money problems, MJ problems, personal problems. You know the drill.

This series is still staying just ahead of X-men for the best comic book movie series thus far, and although Raimi made some choices that I don’t agree with, this is still a very good movie and won’t disappoint the legions of fans eagerly awaiting this release. ‘Nuff said!

CC says:At the Risk of sounding like polly wanting a cracker, i feel the same as MMM. If the Sand man had not decided to leave on his own accord, would they have still been fighting? I mean seriously, The baby goblin turns babyface, the sandman turns babyface, the only thing more could have been if spidey and venom started spooning!! That being said, I love the “Peter’s got a brand new groove” sequence and I loved the effects work on venom. Probably the weakest of the Spidermans but will still be the biggest movie of the summer. Will spiderman ever find a villian he can beat in a fair fight? Will he ever get a hot girlfriend…find out in Spidey 4
